Onion Gravy

Goes lovely with sausages

  • Prep: 5 mins
  • Cook: 30 mins
  • Yields: 4 servings


2 onions thinly sliced

A little oil

A knob of butter

Dash of vinegar

Salt and pepper

1tspn mixed herbs

1-2 tblspn flour

1-2 pints vegetable or beef stock ( a cube is ok )

Dash of Worcestershire sauce or Balsamic vinegar ( optional )


1Put the oil and butter in a pan and n a medium heat

2Add the onions and cook gently for about 10 minutes

3Add the salt , pepper , herbs and vinegar

4Cook for another minute or 2

5Sprinkle in the flour and mix well with the oil and butter - cook for 2 minutes

6Gradually add in the stock - stirring all the time

7Add in the Worcestershire sauce or balsamic if using

8Let it simmer for at least 10 minutes

I love onion gravy, fab with toad in the hole. I also add a teaspoon of red currant jelly to mine.
