Perfect with fish and chips , delicious with faggots

  • Prep: 10 mins
  • Cook: 25 mins

225g dried marrowfat peas

2 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda

Mint sauce ( optional )

1Put the peas into a large bowl

2Add the bicarbonate and cover with 300ml of boiling water

3Stir to make sure the bicarbonate has dissolved.

4Let them soak overnight, or for a minimum of 12 hours.

5Drain the peas

6Put them in a large saucepan,

7cover with boiling water and bring to the boil.

8Add a tspn of sugar and a little salt

9Lower the heat and simmer for 20-30 mins or until the peas have softened and turned mushy

10Stir through a tspn or 2 of mint sauce if using

This makes enough for about 8 , so freeze half

Lovely – I often use Bachelors Quick Soak Dried Peas 50p from Tesco for 250g. Gives enough for 3-4 people. They only need two hours soaking so are perfect to have on standby.
