4oz butter or cooking spread

4oz black treacle

4oz golden syrup

4oz sugar

8oz oats

8oz plain flour

1 tblspn bicarbonate of soda

2 tspns cinnamon

A good 4 tspns ground ginger

1 beaten egg

1/4 pt of milk


1Heat oven to 175C

2Grease and lone a square cake tin or shallow roasting pan

3On a low heat gently melt the butter

4Add in the black treacle, syrup and sugar and heat very gently until sugar start to melt

5Meanwhile combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl

6Don't let the syrup mix get too hot !

7When the sugar is dissolved pour the mix into to dry ingredients , add the beaten egg and mix well

8Gradually add in enough milk to create a batter

9Pour into the prepared tin and put on the bottom shelf of the oven for 1hour- 1hr 15 minutes

10Remove from oven and cool in tin for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool
