Simple white loaf

500g strong white bread flour

1 tblspn softened butter

1.5 tspn caster sugar

1.5 tspn salt

7 g fast action yeast

300ml hand warm water


1Put the flour , salt , sugar and yeast in a bowl.

2Add the butter and rub it in

3Gradually add the water , stirring all the time to combine

4When thoroughly mixed , put the dough ont a floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth and elastic

5Put it into an oiled bowl , cover with clingfilm and let it prove until doubled in size ( this will take an hour , maybe more )

6When it's doubled in size , knock th air back put of it and mould it to fit a 2lb loaf tin

7Put in oiled tin and prove again until doubled in size

8Heat oven to 200C

9Put tin into oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until risen and nicely crusted
