Butter bean and Beef Braise

500g braising steak

1-2 onions sliced

A drop of rapeseed or veg oil

2 garlic cloves minced

1.5 tspn cumin

1.5 -2 tspn smoked paprika

1 tspn chilli powder

1.5 tspn sugar ( I used soft brown , any will do )

1-1.5 tins tomatoes

1 tin of butter beans drained

Optional sliced mushrooms or peppers

I served with orzo but any pasta or even mash would do


1Heat oven to 160c

2Heat the oil in an ovenproof dish and fry the beef in batches until coloured . Now fry off the onions and garlic until soft

3Add in the spices and tomatoes , stir well to combine . Put in the oven and cook for 2.5 hrs

4After 2.5 hours add in the drained butter beans and cook for another 30 minutes . Loosen the sauce with a little water if needed.


6Can be made in a slow cooker , cook for 4-6 hours . Can also be made in a pressure cooker , cook for 25 minutes add the beans and cook for 3 more minutes
