Feed Your Family: More From Less. Shop smart. Cook clever.

How to Shop for Halloween Baking

It’s nearly October and I bet most of you will have thought about what to do for Halloween by now. Especially when the whole family is involved, it can be difficult to find an affordable way to cater for a lot of guests if you’re doing a party. If you’re in a hurry, I can recommend the Iceland party food offer, where you can get any 2 packs for £3.50 or any 3 for £5. You can get anything from mini deep dish pizzas to mozzarella sticks or mini hot dogs. Whether you’ve got a whole spooky bunch to feed or are just looking for some Halloween entertainment for the little ones, it is almost always cheaper to make things from scratch, so here are some affordable Halloween baking ideas and more to get you started.

Baked Apples

Apples are a Halloween classic, so these delicious baked apples will go down a treat for any Halloween party. They’re really easy to make in under an hour, so they’re great fun if the little ones want to help out. I baked mine in an air fryer to save on energy. You can read more about cooking with and shopping for air fryers in my blog on Energy Saving Meals. Don’t worry if you haven’t got an air fryer though. You can bake your apples just as easily in a conventional oven. Read my full recipe here.

You’ll need:

Apples, you can get 8 Pink Lady apples for just 28p per piece

Nuts & (optionally) raisins, you can get a bag of cashews & raisins for just £1, but if you don’t like raisins, you might prefer just peanuts for £1.40

Butter, leftover or 450g for £1

Other than that, all you need is a little water and some leftover cinnamon and nutmeg. My baked apples turned out like this…

Bonfire Toffee

This toffee is perfect for both Halloween and Bonfire Night, as it’s a traditional British treat for long nights. As always, it’s much cheaper to make your own Halloween sweets from scratch with a bit of fun Halloween baking on the side, so I thought I’d feature this here. You can find the full recipe here. Bonfire toffee only takes just over an hour to make, so it’s easy to slot even into a busy schedule. My toffee looked like this…

Bonfire Toffee

For this toffee, you’ll need:

350g of salted butter, you can get 250g for £2.10

Treacle (traditionally), but you can get Maple flavour syrup for just £1 instead

Sugar, preferably muscovado sugar or demerara sugar for £1.10

Condensed Milk for just £1.55 on offer

Ideally, you’d use a sugar thermometer to make this yummy treat!
